Pitt, Clooney open Venice with Coen bros' satire

VENICE () - Brad Pitt and George Clooney hit the red carpet on Wednesday with their latest motion picture "Burn After Reading," a satirical comedy by Oscar winners the Coen brothers which opens this year's Venice film festival.

The actors will bring A-list asterisk power to the 11-day event which features everything from obscure Asian prowess house picture palace to Hollywood heavyweights.

Although on that point are five-spot U.S. films in the main competition lineup of 21, they all represent lower-budget, "independent" cinema as opposed to the bad studios, which are non in Venice this clock time around.

Festival director Marco Mueller brushed aside concerns that Venice, which faces stiff competition from the Toronto film fete starting next month and the Rome film festival in October, was struggling to procure top titles and gift.

Mueller, who with his team saw around 3,000 films which were whittled down to 55 in the prescribed selection, said the light Hollywood studio presence was partly down to the 14-week writers' strike that ended in February.

"We have five-spot American films in contest and almost of those films are films with stars, so in a way the strike only meant that some of the larger studio films will but be released late December or January," he told .

"But American movie theatre is selfsame much at the sum of the program."

Ronson hits back at Gallagher over jibes

DJ and music manufacturer Mark Ronson has strike back at Noel Gallagher's accusation that he ruins other people's music.

Last week in an interview with Chris Moyles, Gallagher said: "He wants to write his own tunes instead of ruining everyone else's. Mark Ronson inevitably to learn three chords on the guitar and write a tune."

In a blog posted on his MySpace page, Ronson defended himself writing: "Noel Gallagher said I should 'learn three chords on the guitar and go spell a tune'.

"So I just wanted him to know that I'm actually pickings guitar lessons from Jay-Z right now and he's already taught me both chords to 'Wonderwall' (tune!).

"In fact, it's so much fun having Jay instruct me all of Noel's songs on the guitar (hooray!) that I'm thinking of doing an Oasis/Jay-Z remix album a la 'The Grey Album'."

In a note at the end of the blog, Ronson also wrote: "PPS Noel, I did write a song called 'Back go Black', which actually has seven chords in it."

Long-lived spunk outfit Toy Dolls formed in Sunderland, England, in October of 1979, in the beginning comprising isaac Bashevis Singer Pete Zulu (born Peter Robson), guitar player Olga (Michael Algar), bassist Flip (Duke of Edinburgh Dugdale), and drummer Mr. Colin Scott. Within a month, and afterward just a handful of gigs, Zulu left the mathematical group, the low gear in a apparently dateless identification number of card changes to follow in the sexual climax age; with novel frontman Hud lasting just now one live date, Olga in agreement to acquire vocal duties, and the leftover Toy Dolls continued as a triad. By the time the group's debut single, "Tommy Kowey's Car," followed in mid-1980, Mr. Scott had exited the lineup as well, with a procession of drummers filling in earlier the comer of Teddy Toy Doll (aka Graham Edmundson) toward the end of the twelvemonth. A handful of compilation tracks including "She's a Worky Ticket" and "Deirdre's a Slag" (a potshot at Enthronization Street virtuoso Deirdre Barlow) farther cemented Toy Dolls' absurdist leanings, and following the exit of Teddy Toy Doll the group tapped drummer Happy Bob (aka Robert Kent, world Health Organization had previously teamed with Olga in the Showbiz Kids) as his successor, issuing a self-financed, self-titled EP in September of 1981.

The individual "Everybody Jitterbug" appeared on EMI the future spring, and in 1983 Toy Dolls issued their long-awaited full-length debut, Dig That Groove Baby. After a enlistment in support of the Angelic Upstarts, both Flip and Happy Bob left the band, however, leaving Olga the sole surviving original member; the revolving lineups continued, just in 1984 a re-recorded version of the before single "Nellie the Elephant" contract with bassist Bonny Baz (Barry Warne) and drummer Dicky (Malcolm Dick) reached the Top Five on the U.K. pop out charts. The LP A Far Out Disc followed in 1985, trailed a twelvemonth by and by by Idle Gossip; despite the usual force turnover, the group noted its number 1 decennary of existence in 1989 with Ten-spot Years of Toys. Amazingly sufficiency, another strong x of new music was forthcoming, with few changes to the band's creative access and legion changes to their roster. Cleopatra Records feted the lot on its twentieth anniversary with the release of the best-of collection The Wonderful World of the Toy Dolls.

Madonna Faces Visitation Challenge By Banda's Father

Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie are facing a challenge to their adoption of Malawian tot David Banda - the baby's biological father wants to fight for visitation rights to the child. The superstar couple's adoption of the two-year-old was finalised at Malawi?s High Court in May - 20 months after being granted an 'interim' order allowing them to take the baby from a Malawian orphanage back to their London home. David was left at the care home after his mother died in childbirth and his peasant farmer dad Yohane Banda was unable to provide for the then-seven-month-old baby. But now Yohane claims government officials had promised him access his son ?every three to four years? as part of the adoption arrangement and he is looking into his legal rights to see the child. He says, "I love the boy and it was in his best interests to put him in the orphanage. "Because I support the adoption I would not want to put up a challenge that would reverse it, but I might challenge some aspects of the order. "I am discussing with my family about following up on having access to the child. We will not leave things the way they are - we will do something about it." Madonna and director Ritchie's adoption of little David has been marred by controversy ever since they brought him back to the U.K., with critics claiming the couple had been given special treatment to side-step the official adoption process.

Foxy Brown pleads guilty in BlackBerry case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Less than a month after being released from prison, U.S. rapper Foxy Brown pleaded guilty on Thursday to menacing a woman with her BlackBerry phone and avoided another possible prison sentence.

Brown, 29, whose real name is Inga Marchand, pleaded guilty to menacing a Brooklyn woman, a misdemeanor, in July 2007 while on probation for assaulting two nail salon stylists over a $20 manicure, a court spokesman said.

Brown was accused of bruising the eye and chipping the tooth of her longtime neighbor Arlene Raymond when she struck the woman with the handheld communications device.

On Thursday, Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge John Walsh sentenced Brown to time already served, issued an order of protection and ordered Brown to submit a letter of apology, the spokesman said.

"I apologize for the incident that occurred on July 31, 2007, in that I attempted to scare Arlene Raymond and place her in harm's way," Brown said in a hand-written note.

Last month, Brown was released after serving eight months of a one-year sentence for violating her parole stemming from the nail salon incident.

With her 1999 album "Chyna Doll," Brown became the first female rap artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the U.S. pop chart encompassing all styles of music.

Mtv - Kelly Fan Arrested For Disrupting Court

R. KELLY's trial for child pornography charges was briefly disrupted on Thursday (22May08) when a fan snuck into the Chicago, Illinois courthouse and yelled at jurors to free the troubled singer.

The Bump N' Grind hitmaker currently stands accused of videotaping himself having sex with a 13-year-old girl, and could face up to 15 years behind bars if he is found guilty.

But proceedings were briefly delayed when Debra Triplett managed to gain access to a freight elevator reserved for the jurors in the courthouse.

The woman then waited for the jury members to exit the elevator, at which point she began to shout "Free R. Kelly!" repeatedly, until she was arrested by police.

She was brought before Judge Vincent Gaughan - the judge presiding over Kelly's case - who found her to be in contempt of court.

Gaughan set bail at $50,000 (GBP25,000) and Triplett is due back in court for a hearing on 25 June (08), reports MTV.com.

Universal Studios reopens Monday after damaging weekend fire

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - Tourists got a view of real-life disaster in the make-believe world of Hollywood on Monday as the Universal Studios theme park reopened after a huge fire swept through back lot sets and buildings. Fire officials said studio workers accidentally set the blaze.

The smell of smoke hung in the air Monday as guests streamed in when the gates reopened and tourists on the park's tram ride applauded firefighters as they drove past. At least a dozen fire trucks remained on the lot as smoke rose from thick, twisted piles of girders.

"We were a bit shocked," said Danish tourist Morten Jull, 20. "We were like, can this be?"

The pass by the fire scene was brief. The tram also drove by undamaged sights, including sound stages, the "Jurassic Park" area where dinosaurs spray water at visitors, the Bates Motel from "Psycho" and Wisteria Lane, scene of TV's "Desperate Housewives."

Later, on a viewing platform overlooking the back lot, several people surveyed the destruction. "It's sad for Hollywood,' said Ismael Garza, 53, a stage manager.

Workers had been using a blowtorch to heat asphalt shingles to apply to the roof of a building facade early Sunday, said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman. They finished about 3 a.m. and followed policy of standing watch for one hour, then left for a break, he said.

A security guard spotted the fire and reported it at 4:43 a.m., Freeman said.

The fire erupted on a streetscape featuring New York brownstone facades at the 161-hectare property. It then destroyed a King Kong attraction, the courthouse square from "Back to the Future" and a streetscape featured in "Spider-Man 2" and "Transformers."

The blaze also gutted a building housing 40,000 to 50,000 videos, but Universal Studios President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer said there were duplicates of everything.

Low water pressure forced firefighters to tap lakes and ponds at Universal, which is working studio as well as a theme park.

The low water pressure may have been due to the volume of water being poured on the blaze - 68,000 litres a minute, Freeman said.

The blaze burned for more than 12 hours but was contained to the back lot, which straddles a pass through the hills between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley.

Universal Studios said it could take several days to assess damage, but it was "business as usual" at its theme park and TV and movie production resumed Monday.

None of the 30 sound stages on the lot were damaged, and the New York streetscape will be rebuilt, she said.

The preservation of the sound stages meant the fire was "not disastrous for the overall industry," said Jack Kyser, chief economist at the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. Sound stages are in high demand by producers and are expensive to build, he said.

Art director Francois Audouy helped shoot the final battle scene of "Transformers" on the New York streetscape, and said it was the longest and widest of its kind in southern California.

"It's a real shame," Audouy said. "There's a New York street at Warner Bros., and Paramount, as well. But Universal's was considered a very unique option for filmmakers to create that New York look."

Another fire at Universal Studios in November 1990 caused $25 million in damage and was started by a security guard who was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to arson. After that fire the New York streetscape was rebuilt in three months.

On Sunday, nine firefighters and a sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries. The deputy and a firefighter were injured in an explosion in the building where the videos were housed, authorities said.

Associated Press writers Shaya Tayefe Mohajer and Ryan Nakashima in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Sex Pistols - Hotel Documentary Recreates Spungens Murder

The fatal stabbing of SEX PISTOLS rocker SID VICIOUS' American girlfriend has been recreated in a new documentary about New York's famed Chelsea Hotel.

Vicious and Nancy Spungen endured a tumultuous, drug-fuelled relationship which ended with her murder on 12 October 1978, at the hotel, where they were living at the time.

Spungen died from a single stab wound to her abdomen. Police traced the murder weapon to Vicious, who was immediately arrested for murder and later freed on bail. He died from a heroin overdose the following February (79), before he could be tried.

The film, Chelsea on the Rocks, will also follow the history of legendary hotel, home in its height to stars like Bob Dylan, Milos Forman, Mark Twain, Ethan Hawke and Grace Jones.

It will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 23 May (08).

Filmmaker Abel Ferrera says, "I lived on the floor with the ghosts. I didn't come in with a point to it, so I just lived there and began filming. It's about the people that lived there, the ghosts, and the people that live there now."
